Success Story: Does Your Home Have a Soul?

What the Spirituality Spoke taught me about the space we call sacred.

When I first started developing the Wheel House Assessment, I knew the Spirituality spoke would be the one that made people pause. Maybe even squirm a little.

Because spirituality is one of those words that means everything and nothing at the same time. It can feel too big, too personal, too hard to pin down. And yet, when I sit with clients and we get to this spoke, it is almost always the one that cracks something open.

So let me tell you what I mean when I say spirituality in the context of your home and your life. I am not asking whether you go to church.

I am not asking about your theology or your practices or your beliefs. What I am asking is much simpler, and in some ways, much harder.

I am asking: does your home support the life that feeds your soul?

“A home can be breathtaking and still leave you spiritually stranded. Not because of what it is, but because of where it sits.”

I learned this firsthand. There was a season in my life when I lived on a piece of land that was genuinely stunning. We called it Clarity Farm, and the name fit. It was the kind of place that stopped you in your tracks on a quiet morning, all open sky and natural beauty and a stillness that felt like a gift. In so many ways, it was deeply peaceful.

But it was remote. And what I did not fully understand until I was living it was how much my spiritual life depended on community. My church. My yoga practice. The people and the places that helped me feel connected to something larger than myself. And Clarity Farm, as beautiful as it was, put all of that out of reach. The distance was real. The isolation crept in slowly and then all at once.

The land was not the problem. The home was not the problem. The problem was that the Spirituality spoke of my Wheel House was quietly starving, and no amount of gorgeous acreage could fix that.

“Your spiritual life does not live inside four walls. It lives in connection. And your home either makes that connection easier or harder.”

For some people, spiritual nourishment looks like a dedicated meditation corner with soft light and a worn prayer book. For others, it is a back porch that faces the tree line for morning coffee in silence. For others still, it is proximity to a faith community, a yoga studio, a place where they can show up and be known.

Spirituality, in the Wheel House, is about connection. Connection to something greater than the daily to-do list. Connection to a sense of purpose and peace. And yes, connection to a home and a location that honors and supports that.

When I work with clients on this spoke, I ask them a few simple questions. Where in your home do you feel most at peace? Is there a space that restores you, or does every room feel like it is asking something of you? And just as importantly: does where you live make it easy to show up for the people, places, and practices that fill you back up?

Sometimes the answer calls for a move. Sometimes it is a single chair moved to catch the morning light. Sometimes it is permission to finally prioritize proximity to community over square footage or acreage or the idea of a dream property that looks perfect on paper.

The Spirituality spoke is not a luxury. It is not something you get to once the other seven spokes are sorted out. It is the quiet center of everything. When it is strong, the rest of your life turns a little more smoothly.
If this is resonating with you, I want to invite you to do one thing today. Walk through your home slowly. Not to make a mental list of what needs to be fixed or cleaned or updated. Just walk through it and notice how you feel. Room by room. Space by space.

Where does your body relax? Where does it tighten? And when you think about the community and the practices that nourish you most, does your home make them easy to reach or harder?

That is your Wheel House talking. And it has a lot to say.
